Il m’arrivait de travailler plus de cinq heures par jour !), j’avais réclamé des vacances à mon agent. Il ne les refusa pas.
Jusqu’à la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, l’île de Bazarape, située en mer des Baléares, à deux cents kilomètres des côtes espagnoles, servait surtout de villégiature aux opposants du régime franquiste. Durant deux heures, ils bavardèrent de rien et de rien avant qu’un parasite prénommé Abdel ne leur propose de sortir. Une salle d’arcade s’animait à deux rues d’ici. On dénombrait à l’intérieur une centaine de jeux, la plupart introuvables dans le commerce, dont Total Wargame Nations III Dark Crusade of Empires Napoleon’s Battle 1914, la dernière création des concepteurs de Battlefight Galactica VI Warrior annihilation : Shades of Darkness. Des hommes en costume, cheveux plaqués en arrière, couleurs aile de corbeau, décompressaient aux bornes. Adil voulut jouer à Speed No Limit II Underscore Edition, une simulation de course de voiture. Il prit en stop son ami puis fut téléporté dans un univers recomposé, peuplé de lutins, de forêts, de champignons hallucinogènes, de circuits en guimauve et de sucettes en forme de panneaux routiers. Simple passager d’Abdel, je ne conduisais pas vraiment : je passais les vitesses lors des lignes droites en confiant les virages à mon co-pilote. En résumé, je menais la belle vie.
Après la course, Benzema but un lait-fraise au bar puis m’interrogea sur mes goûts en matière de jeu vidéo. Je réfléchis longuement avant de me fixer sur Sleeping Dogs, un ersatz de Grand Theft Auto se déroulant à Hong Kong. Karim adorait la mécanique du jeu, similaire à celle de GTA Vice City, qui lui rappelait le film Scarface, son préféré. Il avait retrouvé des références familières dans l’ambition du personnage, dans ses motivations, dans son langage ordurier, les filles, les belles maisons, l’argent. « D’ailleurs, si tu remarques bien, les villas de Tommy Vercetti et de Tony Montana se ressemblent énormément. » Au moins, quand il cherchait à écraser des piétons au volant d’un taxi, il ne manquait jamais sa cible. GTA IV lui avait causé des problèmes. Il était bloqué par une mission « impossible » consistant en une poursuite en moto des docks jusqu’au centre-ville. Je l’avais terminée assez facilement. Pour tout dire, j’avais fini le jeu à 100 % en tuant tous les pigeons dissimulés sur la carte. Il eut du mal à me croire. Il répétait « 100 % ? Non, non, c’est impossible… Impossible… Impossible », à n’en plus finir. Cela en devenait gênant.
Sitôt cette discussion terminée, Benzema s’enferma dans un mutisme profond. Au casino voisin, il posa son cul devant une machine à sous et commença à perdre des sommes considérables. Alerté, Abdel se dévoua pour lui servir de victime. Il l’invita à une table de poker pour l’affronter dans un face à face qu’il perdit volontairement en bluffant comme un débutant. Les all-in avec 7-8 dépareillé se succédèrent au même rythme que les kamizakes japonais sur Pearl Harbor. Peu à peu, Karim retrouva confiance. Il se mit alors à parier sur tout ce qui lui venait à l’esprit : la valeur approximative des jetons de sa pile, la couleur de la prochaine carte du flop ou encore l’âge du croupier. Se promenant ensuite sur la plage, il attrapa une pincée de sable et demanda à Sacha de calculer le nombre de grains prisonniers de la paume de sa main. Sacha fit mine de compter avant de répondre un chiffre au hasard. À nouveau, Benzema laissa éclater sa joie. Le chemin d’accès se terminait sur une place dégagée au style inimitable. Des fins rochers désordonnés permettaient de s’asseoir au-dessus des seringues et des morceaux de verre brisé.
La population de la plage ne manquait pas de charme. L’une des amibes portait des lunettes de soleil si imposantes qu’on aurait dit des rétroviseurs. Une autre créature exhibait un maillot de bain Desigual ; son transistor transpirait une musique électro futuriste de qualité médiocre. Deux autres filles, assises sur des serviettes, dominaient le game. La première femelle paon caressait les cuisses de sa copine sans but précis. De temps en temps, elle se tournait vers nous en suivant avec sa langue les contours de ses lèvres, comme l’aurait fait la petite aiguille d’une montre ; ou n’importe quelle Miss France. Nous étions dans l’impossibilité de nous lever. Par bonheur, elle prit les devants et s’approcha pour nous photographier. Elle embrassa Rami puis se plaça derrière lui afin de masser son dos ; sa comparse l’imita en prenant la place d’Abdel, jusqu’ici préposé aux massages anti-UVA.
Adil et Karim plaisaient aux adolescentes. Je devais me contenter de personnes plus respectables. Cette mère de famille, par exemple. Des beaux yeux. Au moins la quarantaine, quand même… Mon visage respirait l’honnêteté. Ma nouvelle coupe de cheveux, imposée par John-Hugh, forçait le respect. Non, vraiment, elles n’avaient aucune raison de m’ignorer. Ma notoriété était-elle surestimée ? À un moment, au plus fort de ma médiatisation, je recevais trente appels masqués par jour. Comme j’apparaissais accessible, les gens avaient l’impression que je pouvais facilement leur parler. Plus personne ne pouvait me joindre sans mon accord depuis que j’avais changé de numéro. Au moins, ma mère ne risquait pas de me contacter. Quel âge pouvait-on bien lui donner ? Trente-cinq ans, peut-être ? Trente-trois, avec de la chance ?
Des enfants bedonnants voguaient sur la mer, étendus sur un matelas flottant. Des algues tapissaient les murs de leurs châteaux de sable. L’eau semblait sale. Sacha trouva malgré tout le courage d’inviter l’une des deux filles. Ils restèrent plus d’un quart d’heure l’un contre l’autre, presque sans bouger. Sans doute firent-ils l’amour. Sacha n’était pas spécialement beau mais il dégageait une assurance folle. Si les hommes bêtes avaient tant de succès avec les femmes, c’est parce qu’ils ne connaissaient pas le doute. Cette mère de famille m’observait toujours et je demeurais immobile, perturbé par les papouilles de mon voisin. J’avais du mal à choisir. Je réfléchissais trop. Chiara n’arrêtait pas de me le reprocher. Elle s’absentait souvent. Sa carrière de mannequin décollait, les avions nous séparaient. J’avais foi en elle, je ne pouvais la soupçonner de quoi que ce soit. S’il fallait même suspecter vos proches… On n’en finirait pas.
